Field Maple (Acer campestre) is a species of tree native to the UK. It is similar in appearance to sycamore with distinctive winged seed pods. They can grow up to around 20metres tall and live for several hundred years. As an indigenous British tree they make for a very natural choice for new tree planting schemes.
There are many varieties of oak but the native English Oak (Quercus robur) is the one most commonly seen in the UK. Although known to slowly grow for many hundreds of years they are initially fast growing when young. Once established they famously support an ecosystem of wildlife, attracting many species of insects, birds and mammals who feed on acorns.
The Juneberry (Amelanchier alnifolia) is a delightful tree known by many names including 'saskatoon' or 'shadbush'. Although most species are native to North America they are well suited to growing in the British Isles. They can be grown as trees or shrubs and produce a delicate white flower in spring, followed by edible black berries that are sweet and perfect for jams and puddings.
